5th Grade Math: 2012-2013

Welcome to 5th Grade Math! Attached are the course description, my grading system, rules, consequences, and procedures for you. I believe that clear guidelines will prevent future problems throughout the school year. I have an open door policy for all of you. If you're having difficulty with a concept, we'll try different approaches to help you master the material. All you have to do is ask. Your parents may contact me with any questions or concerns via voicemail (XXX) XXX-XXXX or email me at jaguilar9393@gmail.com. Please feel free to contact me any time.

5th Grade Materials provided to student:
Text Books (Must be covered)

All students are responsible for bringing:
1 inch binder with 5 dividers
Notebook (70 pages is sufficient)
2 pencils, correcting pencil or pen, lots of erasers
1 Jumbo Book Sock
Dry Erase markers

Grading:

Tests: 40%, Quizzes: 20%, Class Work Review: 20% Homework: 20%

All students start out with 100% for their homework grade. Each missing homework assignment is a 5 point deduction. If a student has three missing homework assignments, his/her homework grade goes from 100% to 85%. Late homework will not be accepted. As a rule, I do not assign Extra Credit on an individual basis. Please do not ask me, "How can I raise my grade?" My standard response is, "Do your homework, take notes, pay attention in class, and study for quizzes/tests." I give you many opportunities to raise your grade throughout the marking period. If I choose to assign extra credit, it will be for everyone. I do not "give" grades, you earn them.

Class Procedures

HOMEWORK: Upon entering the classroom, students will copy down homework into their student planner. Students should take out the prior night's homework, a marking pen, pencil, and notebook. Homework is generally assigned every night, except Friday. If a page in the Student Homework Book is not assigned, students should be reviewing notes and practicing math facts every night.

ABSENT STUDENTS: If your parent/guardian did not request homework, it is your responsibility to make up any missed homework.

BATHROOM USAGE: Each student must sign out. Due to security concerns, I need to know where students are at all times. Therefore, only one student may leave at a time. We will determine a "bathroom signal" so that students do not need to verbally ask for permission from the teacher. Unless there is an emergency, student should wait until the teacher is done with the instructional lesson.

PENCIL SHARPENING: Pencils are to be sharpened in the morning or during "down" time. Students are not allowed to get up during class to sharpen pencils- This is very distracting. Students go through a LOT of pencils in math class, please make sure that each student has at least two sharpened pencils in math class.

MOVEMENT AROUND THE ROOM: Students do not need permission to get tissues, paper, or supplies. Otherwise, unless directed by a teacher, students should remain in their seats. Scrap paper should be disposed of at the end of class.

Rules

1. BE PREPARED: Bring all necessary materials to class. This includes math text, notebook, homework, etc. Students must bring two pencils and one marking pen to class. After a grace period of a few weeks, students will not be allowed to return to their homeroom for missing materials.

2. BE READY TO WORK: Upon entering the classroom, students are to immediately copy homework into their planner, get necessary materials and begin opening activities.

3. BE POLITE: Listen carefully when the teacher or a student is speaking. No "fighting", name calling, bothering, and so on. Don't exclude anyone from an activity. Have tolerance for students' opinions that differ from your own. Never make fun of a student in any way.

4. RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE'S PROPERTY: Keep the room clean, return borrowed property, pick up litter, and get permission before using another person's possessions.

5. ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN LEARNING: You'll be learning many new concepts. It's up to you to master them.
